About Ukumehame Firing Range
Ukumehame Firing Range is the only legal public shooting facility on Maui, situated on 84.1 acres along the West Maui coast near Lahaina. Operated by the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation, the facility provides a controlled outdoor venue for recreational target shooting, hunter preparation, and marksmanship practice. Its four distinct ranges - a pistol range, a rifle range, a clay target range, and a dedicated police range - serve a broad user base that includes recreational shooters, law enforcement, the National Guard, and hunters seeking to refine their skills before heading into the field.
The facility’s operations rely on a partnership model between the county and local shooting organizations. Valley Isle Sports Shooters, Maui Center Target Shooting Club, and the Hawaiʻi Youth Livestock Association through Maui Ammo and Guns Supply manage the non-police ranges and the classroom, organize competitive and recreational events, and deliver firearms safety education and youth shooting programs. The clay target range, reserved for shotguns, runs trap, skeet, and sporting clays events typically on weekends. A classroom building supports hunter education and gun-handling courses, while two ranges feature covered shooter’s patios with storage rooms and 110-volt electrical outlets for equipment. ADA parking stalls at each range and an ADA-accessible portable toilet address accessibility needs, though no paved paths or additional permanent structures are advertised.
Amenities remain spare and suited to the rugged coastal environment. The site offers no running water, picnic areas, or swimming access. Visitors park in a single unmarked gravel lot and use three portable toilets.
