About Lake City Army Ammunition Plant
Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP), located in Independence, Missouri, stands as one of the United States’ most historically significant military production facilities. Established in 1940 as the Lake City Ordnance Plant during the buildup for World War II, this installation has operated continuously for over eight decades, serving as a critical component of America’s defense infrastructure.
The facility executes contract oversight for the production of small caliber ammunition, with a modern production capacity reaching 1.6 billion rounds annually. Following significant modernization efforts throughout the 1970s and 1990s, LCAAP now operates with advanced automated systems and computer-controlled manufacturing processes that represent the state-of-the-art in military ammunition production.
Beyond ammunition manufacturing, the facility hosts the North American Regional Test Center and provides support for the 325th Field Hospital as a training location. It also manages ceremonial ammunition services through the Joint Munitions Command. Following the 2001 terrorist attacks, the plant established link production capability and increased operations substantially to support military campaigns and ensure Joint Warfighter readiness.
Operating 24/7, LCAAP maintains round-the-clock operations to support the military’s continuous ammunition supply needs. The facility plays a critical role in sustaining the Army’s small-caliber ammunition supply chain and maintaining production readiness for current and future warfare requirements.
Visitors should note that access is restricted to authorized personnel only and requires valid identification documentation such as a REAL ID or Passport card. The facility maintains rigorous security protocols to protect national security interests, and prospective visitors should allow adequate time for the comprehensive security screening process.
