About Dixie Trap & Gun Club
Dixie Trap and Gun Club stands as one of Alabama’s premier shooting facilities, established in 1985 and privately owned by Bill and Becky Parson Jr. Located on 132 acres approximately 20 miles southeast of Montgomery near Mathews, Alabama, the club has become a destination for clay shooters, rifle enthusiasts, and hunters seeking comprehensive shooting opportunities. The facility’s location and amenities have made it the host site for the annual Alabama State Trapshooting Championships, reflecting its reputation for excellence in the shooting sports community.
The club’s primary appeal lies in its diverse shooting sports offerings and meticulous facility maintenance. Seven professionally equipped trap fields feature Pat Trap machines with adjustable pricing ($7-9 per round depending on membership status), allowing shooters to hone their clay target skills in a competitive environment. Beyond traditional trap, the facility offers four distinct clay shooting disciplines: Skeet shooting on two voice-release fields, 5-Stand which combines trap, skeet, and sporting clay elements for dynamic shooting challenges, and two Wobble fields with configurable settings that produce unpredictable target flight paths. This variety ensures that both experienced competitive shooters and newcomers exploring different disciplines can find engaging challenges.
For rifle and pistol shooters, Dixie Trap provides a covered facility with three distinct shooting lines at 100, 200, and 340 yards, accommodating everything from close-range pistol practice to long-distance precision rifle work. The infrastructure and thoughtful design cater to shooters of all skill levels, from beginners learning fundamental marksmanship to advanced shooters refining competition techniques. The 2,400 square-foot clubhouse serves as the social hub, featuring restrooms, a kitchen with dining areas, lounge spaces, television facilities, and a small pro shop for basic supplies and shotgun rentals ($10 daily).
The on-site amenities extend beyond shooting to accommodate extended visits and events. Forty RV campsites with water and electricity hookups make the facility ideal for weekend retreats or multi-day shooting tournaments. The club’s catering services and comfortable accommodations have made it a preferred venue for group outings, corporate events, and family shooting experiences. Membership costs $125 annually for clay sports access and $75 for rifle/pistol ranges, with daily fees available ($15 daily for rifle/pistol use). Youth shooters aged 21 and younger receive discounted membership rates, and the facility offers free introductory lessons to help newcomers develop proper technique and safety habits.
Safety and inclusivity form the foundation of the club’s operations. The facility requires no minimum age for supervised shooting, with eye and hearing protection included with facility access. The availability of rental shotguns (Browning, Remington, and Winchester models) allows shooters to try different options before making purchasing decisions. The experienced staff ensures that all visitors understand and follow proper range etiquette and safety protocols, creating an environment where both competitive shooters and recreational visitors feel welcome and supported.
